'Big Books' are over sized books with large print that are used as a key element of our Kindergarten Literacy program.
Through the shared reading of Big Books, students are actively engaged in the content and humour of the stories, whilst consolidating their understandings of concepts of print (left to right, top to bottom, picture/text, letters/words), and experiencing the rhythm and rhyme whilst reading.
The Big Books we use feature repetitive, predictable text and rhyme, two key components of developing early reading skills. This is also where our high frequency, or sight words, are introduced.
Big books are rotated among the three Kindergarten classes. Students are involved in a range of cross-curricular and differentiated activities related to the books to integrate their learning whilst focusing on key elements of literacy development. Take a look at the three slideshows below.
