Pirate fun and Pirate games took place in Kindergarten during the first week of Term 4. The dashing pirate in brown is Mr. James, a professional experience student from the University of Wollongong. He will be working with KD for the first three weeks of this term. Kindergarten were very lucky today to have a visit from Matt and Luke from St. George 'Dragons' to teach us about the importance of good sportsmanship and to learn some rugby skills. It was a great session enjoyed by all and we are already looking forward to the session next week. The Moruya 'Granite Town' Festival is fast approaching. We have been helping to make some scales for the 'Rainbow Snake' lantern which will be one of the floating lanterns opening the festival. A number of schools are joining together to create the "Rainbow Snake' for this years' festival. The theme for this year is 'Dreaming.'
http://www.granitetown.com.au/riverlights/ Linking in with Fruit and Veg. month we hefted fruit and vegetables and placed them in order from heaviest to lightest. We used an equal arm balance to check our results. We discovered that hefting using our arms was quite a good way to sort by mass unless the fruit or vegetables were very similar mass. Whilst exploring 'mass' we created some very unusual monsters. We discovered that the mass of a monster remained constant even when it changed shape unless play dough was added or taken away. Her are some of our 'Mass Monsters'.
During our Science Unit 'Move It!' we have been exploring how things move. We looked at features of vehicles that help them to roll and to slide. We then designed our own vehicle with the aim that it would carry a 'Duplo Man' and would either roll or slide down the 'testing ramp'. Using recycled materials we then made and tested our vehicles. See below for the results of our design and make task. Following on from the Taste for the Senses as part of Fruit and Vege month, with Belle in the canteen, and as part of our exploration of the book, Handa's Surprise, the children in KW were risk-takers on Friday when they tasted fruit featured in the story. To begin with, they used descriptive words to describe the look, feel and smell of the fruit with the skin on, then, after it was cut, they used their senses again to describe the look, feel and smell of the cut fruit. The next step was to lick and taste the fruit. A lot of children had never tried fresh orange, mango, pineapple or avocado before and showed that they were fabulous risk-takers by trying them. The fresh pineapple and mango received the most thumbs up votes, and the children were quite proud of themselves for trying something new. They also displayed great communication skills in describing the fruit, along with being patient and respectful of the choices of others. Working in conjunction with NSW Health we are celebrating 'Fruit and Veg. month between Aug.24th and Sept.18th. In Kindergarten we have been following a 10 week program about health, nutrition and hygiene.
Week 7 of the program "Snacks for Your Senses' aimed to encourage children to try a wider range of fruit and vegetables and to explore the enticing smells, variety of textures and delicious tastes available. Belle created a wonderful display and 'taste testing session' of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. The session took place in our 'Bengello Bites' school canteen, with another opportunity to try something new in the classroom. Thanks Belle for a great sensory experience! |
